Photosynthesis in Action – Day and Night Plant Model!
This amazing science project shows how plants make their own food using sunlight. It also explains what happens during the day and night. The model displays the sun, moon, tree, roots, water, and gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide.
It is a fun and creative way to understand photosynthesis!

Creative school project explaining photosynthesis using day night tree model
Science Concept Behind It
Plants make their own food through a process called photosynthesis.
In simple words:
- During the day, plants use:
- Sunlight
- Carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air
- Water from the soil
- And they produce:
- Sugars (food for the plant)
- Oxygen (O₂) that we breathe
At night, there is no sunlight, so plants cannot make food. But they still breathe like us!
Materials Required
- Cardboard box
- Colored paper (blue, black, green, yellow)
- Craft foam or chart paper
- Brown clay or paper for the tree trunk
- Artificial leaves or paper leaves
- Cotton/thread (for roots)
- Glue and scissors
- Marker pen
- Small paper labels
- Green sponge or sawdust (for grass effect)
Step-by-Step Working Explanation
Step 1: Make the Base
Create a box showing soil at the bottom and sky at the back.
Step 2: Create Day and Night
- Left side: Blue sky with a bright sun
- Right side: Dark sky with moon
Step 3: Build the Tree
- Make a tree trunk using clay or paper.
- Add green leaves.
- Add roots under the soil using a thread.
Step 4: Add Labels
Label:
- Sunlight
- Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
- Oxygen (O₂)
- Water
- Minerals
- Sugars
Step 5: Explain the Flow
Show arrows:
- CO₂ goes into leaves
- Water comes from roots
- Sunlight hits leaves
- Oxygen goes out
- Sugars move inside the plant
What Kids Learn
- How plants make food
- Importance of sunlight
- What is oxygen and carbon dioxide
- Why plants are important for Earth
- How roots absorb water and minerals
Real-Life Applications
- Helps us understand why trees are important
- Shows why we must protect forests
- Explains how plants give us oxygen
- Helps farmers grow healthy crops
Safety Tips
- Use scissors carefully
- Do not taste glue or materials
- Work with adult supervision
Why This Project Is Great for Kids
- Combines art and science (STEM learning)
- Easy to understand
- Visual learning makes it memorable
- Encourages creativity
- Perfect for school exhibitions
Extension Ideas
- Add a small LED light for the sun to show a real light effect.
- Add a mini water cycle model beside it.
- Add a small chart explaining the photosynthesis equation in simple form.
This project beautifully shows how plants help us live. Without plants, there would be no oxygen and no life on Earth. That’s why trees are our best friends!
