Such words do not have an image associated with them, nor can they be broken down with the help of their meaning so that children can learn them. Thus, children are encouraged to memorize these words by sight.

These words also do not follow the usual spelling rules, are phonetically irregular that is, their sound does not consistently match up to their letters- and are mostly adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and the most common verbs.
