With this Cypher Wheel, you can put your kids to the test.

Direction:

  1. Use only letters from the alphabet to compose a message (no numbers). There are just 24 letters in the cypher wheel… So, for a “J,” substitute a “Y,” and for a “Q,” substitute a “O.”
  2. Take a single letter from the alphabet and write it down. This should be the first letter of your encrypted message (don’t use J or Q because they don’t appear on the wheel). In the above illustration, I choose H. My encrypted message starts with the letter “H,” as you can see.
  3.  Turn the wheel until the black arrow pointing to the letter you have selected appears. This letter is the “Key,” which means your youngster will need both the cypher and the key to complete the puzzle.
  4. Don’t move the steering wheel! Find each letter in your original message on the outer wheel and write down the letter that is precisely below it on the inner wheel. You’ll have your encrypted message when you’re done!
