In this day and age of digital entertainment, it’s important for kids to stop sitting and watching stuff on the internet or TV, but to explore and experience it first hand for their development is a must. It is more fun when you can do it with a simple item lying around such as a straw. Therefore, here are a few crafts, which will help your kid to understand and learn with fun.

1. Straw toy crafts for kids using straws

Things You Need

  • Paper cup
  • Pen
  • Rubber gloves
  • Straw
  • Rubber band

Procedure

  • Take a paper cup and with a pen punch a hole at one side near the bottom. This is where the straw will go through.
  • Take the rubber glove and with a rubber band secure it on the mouth of the cup.
    Place the straw in the hole and the straw toy is ready.

2. Straw and potato experiment

Things You Need

  • Potato
  • Pencil
  • Straw
  • Knife

Procedure

  • Under adult supervision, when you will try using a table knife you will find that you cannot get through the potato all the way through.
  • The same thing happens with the pencil because the potato is quite thick.
  • Try the same thing with the straw and you will find it difficult, but you can do it with a straw.
  • Cover one end of the straw with your thumb and do the same and you will be able to pierce the potato.
  • This happens because of the air trapped inside the straw that creates pressure and makes the straw stronger.

3. Straw Spinner crafts for kids using straws

Things you need

  • Straws
  • Scissors
  • Clay
  • Tape

Procedure

  • Take a piece of straw and cut it into a small piece, now fold it and cut a slit on both sides at the fold to form a hole. Tape both ends to close them and give it fan like edges.
  • Take another straw, cut it in half, make one hole, take the fan like straw, and pass it through.
  • Close the end with clay. The straw spinner is ready for a spin.

4. Maze Building crafts for kids using straws

Things you need

  • Straws
  • Thick Paper
  • Tape
  • Marble

Procedure:

  • Take the thick paper to use as a base for the maze. The straws will be stuck to the paper to make the maze using tape.
  • The maze completed by cutting the straw into various lengths to play with and placing them to form a labyrinth, and pass the marble along it.
  • The kids will love to play with it and will learn skills along the way like building and solving problems.

5. Rockets crafts for kids using straws

Things you need

  • Rocket printable
  • Straw
  • Crayons
  • Scissors
  • Squeeze bottle

Procedure

  • Take out a printout of a rocket design cut it into shape.
  • Take the straw and cut it to size smaller than the rocket, tape one end to close it, and paste it behind the rocket.
  • Take another straw, which can fit inside the straw behind the rocket. Take a squeeze bottle for blowing air or blow by mouth. The rocket is now ready.

6. Hoop Glider crafts for kids using straws

Things You Need

  • Straws
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Tape
  • Pencil
  • Ruler

Procedure

  • Take your piece of paper, ruler and pencil. Cut out three strips of paper of size 1 inch by 5 inches. Cut them out.
  • Take cello tape and paste two of strips together to form a big hoop. While paste the ends together of the third strip to form a small hoop.
  • Now take the straw and tape the smaller hoop on one end of the straw and the bigger loop on the other end. Be careful not to crush of fold the straw while doing this. The glider is now ready to ride the air.

7. Straw and bottles experiment

Things you need

  • Straw
  • Bottles
  • Knife
  • M seal
  • Balloon

Procedure

  • Take a straw and join two straws together by putting one end of straw in another.
    Using a craft knife (by adult) pierce a hole close to the bottom in one bottle and taking a smaller bottle.
  • Put one end of the straw in the top of the smaller bottle and the other end of the straw through the hole. Seal the hole with M seal to avoid any leakage.
  • Now after sealing fill the bottle with coloured water and put the cap on. The other bottle will keep filling from the filled water bottle through the straw until it equals out.
  • Take a balloon, fill it with air and place it on the bottle filled with water after removing the cap. The water will keep emptying until the air in the balloon runs out.

8. Water bending a straw experiment

Things you need

  • Straw
  • Glass tumbler
  • Water

Procedure

  • Take an empty glass tumbler and put a straw in it, there will be no visible difference.
  • Now pour water into the glass, you will observe that in the glass the straw seems bent.
  • This easy experiment has just these steps have fun with your child.
